The Most Festive Neighbor on the Block
Each holiday season, Atascadero becomes a spirit-filled wonderland. Whether you’re looking for a family adventure, a festive night out, or a nostalgic stroll under twinkling lights, this city delivers. Here’s a roundup of some of the most magical holiday happenings around town.
Christmas at Santa Margarita Ranch
Kick off the season with a distinctly Atascadero charm. From Nov. 28 through Dec. 21, Santa Margarita Ranch hosts its beloved Christmas at the Ranch event.
- Board the Jingle Bell Express, a vintage steam train, for a ride through lighted landscapes.
- Once you arrive at Santa’s Village, you’ll find fire pits, craft stations, pony rides, games, and even a magic show by Andy Morris.
- There’s also a seasonal marketplace with artisan vendors, plus food trucks (s’mores around the campfire, anyone?) and cozy drinks.
- Be sure to purchase tickets in advance!
This event has a vintage, rustic feel — perfect for families or anyone longing for that nostalgic holiday warmth.
Light Up the Downtown + Holiday Sip & Shop
Downtown Atascadero lights up on Dec. 5, from 5:30-8 p.m., with the Light Up the Downtown and Holiday Sip & Shop.
- Local shops stay open late, festively decorated, ready for holiday browsing.
- Sip local wines while you shop — there are tasting wristbands for participating downtown businesses. Get tasting tickets from the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce.
- Add in hay rides, a fire truck, hot cocoa, and even a visit from Santa to complete the evening.
It’s the kind of night where downtown feels like the heart of holiday cheer — warm, communal, and lively.
Garden Lights & Winter Nights
Beginning Dec. 5 and running through mid-January, the Sunken Gardens area is transformed into a glowing wonderland for Garden Lights & Winter Nights.
- Every evening from 5-10 p.m., you can stroll through the gardens wrapped in festive lighting.
- The lights amplify the downtown area’s holiday feel, making for a peaceful and picturesque walk.
- Great for family photo ops, the lighting display stays up well into January!
Holiday Musical Walk Around the Lake
Join the Holiday Musical Walk Around the Lake at Atascadero Lake Park on Dec. 6, from 5:30-9 p.m.
- Bring your coat and your holiday spirit! Local carolers and community singers provide live music along the lake paths.
- Santa makes appearances too, first at the Zoo (5–6:30 p.m.), then later near the Ranger House by the pavilion (around 7 p.m.).
- It’s an intentionally relaxed, charming way to welcome winter — you’ll feel like part of the community as you walk, listen, and celebrate.
Winter Wonderland
One of the biggest events of the season: Winter Wonderland happens on Dec. 12, from 5-9 p.m., in the Sunken Gardens and downtown.
- Over 70 tons of snow are brought in, creating giant snow piles and a huge snow slide.
- There’s something for everyone: bounce houses, obstacle courses, jousting, bungee jumps, and even a kiddie train.
- Santa and his elves make an appearance, and there are more than 50 food and craft vendors sprinkled throughout.
- Expect musical performances, dance, and community entertainment centered around City Hall too.
This is where Atascadero leans fully into “winter magic,” unexpected for our mild Central Coast — but all the more magical because of it.
Holiday Magic at the Central Coast Zoo
On Dec. 20, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., the Central Coast Zoo hosts its annual Holiday Magic event.
- Throughout the morning, zookeepers deliver wrapped gifts to the animals — yes, the animals open them!
- Santa will be around for photos and holiday cheer.
- The zoo will be fully decked out, creating a festive backdrop while you watch your favorite creatures unwrap surprises.
- Best of all? This magic-filled morning is included with regular Zoo admission. No extra “holiday ticket” needed.
This event is especially delightful for families. The animal gift-giving is sweet, fun, and totally in the spirit of giving.
Whether you’re a longtime local or just visiting, these holiday happenings showcase exactly why Atascadero is your favorite neighbor — warm, welcoming, and always ready to celebrate together. From snow-filled fun and sparkling lights to cozy community traditions, this town knows how to make everyone feel at home for the holidays.
