Time It Right: Events Make It Effortless

When is a good time to visit Atascadero? If you’re looking for an easy way to tap into a social scene, plan your trip around one of our signature events:

  • Central Coast Craft Beer Festival, March
  • Tamale Festival, May
  • Atascadero Lakeside Wine Festival, June
  • Cruisin’ Weekend, August
  • Brew at the Zoo, September
  • Colony Days Parade & Festivities, October
  • Atascadero Fall Festival, October/November
  • Winter Wonderland, December

Atascadero is known for its annual events, when everyone comes together and the downtown area is completely bustling with businesses open later than usual and lots of fun popups. It’s a very communal vibe and the easiest way to feel like you’ve been invited in rather than just passing through.

Be sure to check our calendar listings for specific dates and other events. There’s always something happening, from our weekly farmers market (Wednesdays at the Sunken Gardens) to Central Coast Zoo happenings and live music at local bars and restaurants. Events like these bring out a mix of locals and visitors, all there for the same reason: good food and drink, great conversation, and something to ease into without needing a plan.

Downtown: Walkable, Welcoming, and Just Enough Buzz

If you’re wondering where to stay in Atascadero on your solo trip, we’d recommend getting close to downtown. You can check into a nearby hotel, step outside, and have everything within reach: restaurants, wine bars, boutiques, and coffee spots. It’s ideal for solo travelers who want to explore without overthinking planning.

Spend the morning with a slow coffee, wander through a few shops, grab lunch somewhere that looks good, and maybe cap it off with a glass of local wine. You’ll start recognizing faces by the end of the day – that’s just how it works here.

The Carlton Hotel is our most centrally located hotel downtown. The 1920s building recently underwent incredible renovations that maintain its historic charm while adding a ton of modern amenities and style. Other great hotels, B&Bs and vacation rentals border the downtown area, just a quick walk, drive or bike ride away.

A Breath of Fresh Air: Explore Outdoors

When you’re ready to explore beyond downtown, Atascadero offers an easy transition into nature. Outdoor spaces are thoughtfully woven into the fabric of the city, with places like Stadium Park providing accessible settings for a quiet walk, fresh air, and incredible views of the city and beyond.

Head to Atascadero Lake Park to visit the Central Coast Zoo, take an easy walk around the lake’s border, or even rent a paddle boat from Wild Fields Lakeside, which also has great craft beer. Venture a bit farther out to our neighboring tiny town of Santa Margarita, where Margarita Adventures offers guided nature tours, e-bike tours, ziplining and more. Spot wildflowers in the spring, and head to the beach for a coastal break, just about a half-hour drive away.

With our beautiful year-round weather, the outdoors is simply a part of the day. You can spend the morning among oak trees and open trails, then return downtown in time for dinner, moving between experiences without any sense of rush.

Close to Everything, But Not in the Middle of It

Part of Atascadero’s charm is its location. You’re right next door to vineyard country and a short drive from the coast, without the crowds and the expense that often come with those destinations. It’s a home base that feels like a retreat, close to everything yet comfortably its own.

For solo travelers, that balance makes it easy to explore at your own pace. Spend the day out, then come back to a place that feels calm and familiar. Atascadero keeps things simple in the best way, giving you space to do as much or as little as you’d like. Plan your trip soon. We can’t wait to welcome you.
