A Day at the Zoo

Share:

Atascadero, California, is a charming town nestled in the heart of SLO CAL, and while it may be best known for its wine country and stunning natural beauty, it also boasts a hidden gem: the Central Coast Zoo. This unique zoo offers a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages, showcasing a diverse range of animals in a beautiful setting.

A Bit of History

The Central Coast Zoo, formerly Charles Paddock Zoo, has a fascinating history dating back to the 1920s when Charles Paddock, a local businessman, began collecting exotic animals as a hobby. His collection grew over time, and in 1947, he opened the zoo to the public. Today, the zoo is home to over 100 animal species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Explore the Zoo

The zoo is organized into a variety of habitats where animals from around the globe live in settings that reflect their natural environments. Some of the highlights include:

  • Primate Habitat: This area is home to a range of primates such as black-handed spider monkeys and lemurs. Visitors can watch these social, intelligent animals move through their space and interact with one another.
  • Tropical and Hotspot Habitats: These habitats feature animals from biodiversity hotspots like Indo-Burma and Madagascar, including species such as red pandas, fossa, and meerkats. They showcase the diversity of life found in ecosystems around the world and help tell the story of conservation.
  • Aviary Habitat: This space is home to a variety of colorful and fascinating birds, including Caribbean flamingos and other species that thrive in open, enriched environments. Visitors can admire the bright plumage and behaviors of these birds up close.

These habitats offer opportunities to learn about each animal’s adaptations and conservation while exploring the zoo’s engaging collection.

Beyond the Habitats

In addition to the animals, the Central Coast Zoo offers a variety of educational programs and events throughout the year. These include:

  • Keeper Talks and Animal Ambassador Experiences: Zoo staff share engaging insights about featured animals and their natural behaviors, and guests can participate in up-close meet-and-greets with education animals that help illustrate conservation concepts.
  • Birthday Parties: Celebrate with a unique party at the Zoo’s garden event space, complete with a 30-minute animal presentation featuring some of the Zoo’s ambassador animals.
  • Summer Camps: Seasonal camps guide campers through hands-on activities, keeper chats, tours, games, and learning opportunities focused on wildlife diversity and conservation.
  • Field Trips and Traveling Programs: Scheduled group experiences bring the Zoo’s education team to schools, clubs, libraries, and other community locations or bring classes to the Zoo for immersive outdoor learning.

The Zoo also hosts special events throughout the year, such as “Party for the Planet” for Earth Day and seasonal celebrations that highlight animals, conservation topics, and family-friendly fun.
